The Cuban Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians (Actaf) in the province of Holguín, promotes and supports the development towards sustainable agriculture, through direct actions with agricultural producers in this territory of eastern Cuba.
Proof of the above has been the XII Provincial Meeting of Agroecology, Organic and Sustainable Agriculture, developed at the headquarters "José de la Luz y Caballero", of the University of Holguín, sponsored by the Actaf, an event that met the expectations of its organizers.
In my opinion, the debates and analysis of the more than 50 papers presented by researchers, producers and other professionals linked to the agricultural sector, show that the application of science and technology in the territory of Holguin opens pathways towards attainable agricultural development.
Issues such as environmental protection, gender equity, food security, and innovations based on productive increase capable of guaranteeing sustainable agriculture, characterized the debates and exchanges of experiences.
I consider it plausible to point out that among the participants there was a consensus that the application of agroecology in agriculture in Holguin, constitutes a possible and necessary way depending on the development perspectives to which holguin producers aspire.
Finally I am pleased to note that the 10 most outstanding papers, according to the evaluation made by specialists in the field, will represent Holguin at an International Meeting on Agroecology, Organic and Sustainable Agriculture, scheduled to take place in the Cuban capital shortly.
From now on, the researchers, producers, and professionals of the agricultural sector of Holguin who will attend this international event, assume the challenge and commitment, to demonstrate that agroecology opens up steps in this territory, and thus will contribute to a healthy and sustainable agriculture in benefit of the people's food.
