The use of biogas is one of the main priorities for agriculture in the Cuban province of Holguin, a strategy that seeks exploiting renewable sources of energy. Jorge Balceira, a researcher and professor of the University of Holguin, said that this alternative exploits the wastes from pig breeding.
The specialist said that biogas, which is reached at the pig breeding farms in the province, can also be used for watering, as fertilizers and power generation, and also to contribute to protecting the environment.
In Holguin province there are many places where biogas is used on such a sense. A good example is big breeder Eliades Ochoa in Aguas Claras, north of the provincial capital city, who supplies power to 14 houses located in that rural community.
In Cuba there are about 700 biogas plants which are located near state owned farms or private ones. / CNA – Translated by Radio Angulo.
